As enterprises migrate to the cloud, cloud-based services are emerging as a new and potentially huge revenue opportunity for network operators. Yet, the underlying network requirements for cloud networks are very different from what is provided by the static-pipe networks of today. For cloud resources to be shared efficiently, communications networks need to be deterministic (not best effort) and, in many cases, low latency so that applications and storage resources "feel" local, even when they are separated by many tens and hundreds of kilometers. In addition, for operators to profit from the on-demand nature of the cloud, the network needs to be dynamic so that bandwidth can be turned up and down quickly and as required by the applications. This session will delve into the critical role of optical networks in the cloud infrastructure and will include perspectives from suppliers building equipment as well as from network operators that are building the networks. While the focus of the session will be on the optical layers, it will also provide perspectives on other networks.

The fastest way to shrink your operational expenses and start generating revenue is to find the fastest way to test and turn up services. Sometimes it's as simple as eliminating unnecessary or redundant steps in the process.
A long-standing method for testing new services and troubleshooting existing ones is the bit error rate test. It's also the most time consuming, often requiring two or more cycles of 12- to 24-hour testing and monitoring. Imagine being able to reduce that time by a half or more. Test and service assurance solutions providers have found ways to do this, such as using a combination of Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) testing and BER testing. In this live webinar, our speakers will show, using the math, that there is a better option to standard BER testing. Viewers will learn:
- The symbiotic relationship between OSNR and BER
- Why at least some BER testing might be redundant
- How OSNR testing can predict the success (and therefore the need) of a BER test
- How streamlining this process saves opex
- How you can get to the troubleshooting stage much quicker if needed

Mobile operators are motivated to increase brand loyalty and reduce subscriber churn. In order to achieve these objectives, networks have to be well funded and operated, and subscribers must enjoy a high quality of experience. Subscribers who get what they want when they want it will be loyal subscribers. While it may seem impossible, mobile operators can achieve increased brand loyalty and low levels of churn without breaking the bank.
Managing access congestion in mobile networks is an important part of delivering over-the-top and on-deck services with good quality to subscribers. In areas of congestion that have sufficient investment in capacity, mobile operators have to consider what is a fair network policy control framework. Is the delivery of time-sensitive data more important than the delivery of non-time-sensitive data? Is the delivery of a normal user’s data more important than the delivery of a heavy user’s data? Is the delivery of data for a subscriber in good standing more important than that of a subscriber who consistently doesn’t pay bills? The networks of today have very simple yet profoundly important requirements that determine the operators’ overall competitiveness. These requirements can be summarily grouped into two main points: Versatility and Multi-App Support.
Network Versatility in this context refers to the ability of the network to scale in two dimensions: Data Plane and Control Plane. Control plane traffic is generated by network elements and more recently by smartphones to keep the network operation up and it does not generate any direct income for the operator. Control plane scaling points to the ability of the network to process the network-generated protocol messages in a deterministic manner -- this has been a silent issue for the operator recently, e.g., LTE networks generate an average of ten times more control plane messages than its predecessors. In the data plane, Versatility will require that a network continue to operate even in adverse conditions per expected traffic storms, generated by high volume of data, e.g., video (fixed line or mobile).
Multi-App Support refers to the ability of the operator to offer the applications that its market demands, in a quick manner. The operator has to be able to deploy the service quickly to remain competitive and eliminate any opportunity costs. For example, fast delivery of video is now a necessity for all parties: the end user, the operator and the content provider. Since priority is the operator’s main asset in service offering, it is necessary that the operator has the tools to prioritize the content and its delivery. Techniques to facilitate and prioritize services, e.g., content caching and deep packet inspection, enable the operators to generate income from both the subscriber and the content provider.
Deployment of business and residential services in both fixed and mobile networks require versatility and rapid deployment of applications to ensure the expected investment returns for the operators. In this seminar, we will discuss both variants and show that each will have a profound impact on the network operations and business viability.

The increase of intelligent mobile devices and bandwidth-intensive applications is forcing operators to adopt new models for mobile infrastructure that provide greater coverage and capacity per subscriber. These typically involve physical separation of baseband units (BBUs) and radio remote units (RRUs or RRH). An advanced example of this is Cloud RAN, where the RRH is deployed closer to subscribers while the more complex BBUs are housed in a central facility similar to a cloud computing model. To enable these infrastructure models a new type of connectivity is required -- often referred to as “fiber front-haul” or fiber to the antenna (FTTA).

Cable operators and telco TV providers have long relied on MPEG-2 transport and UDP streaming to deliver video-on-demand programming. Now, as they add Internet video services and pipe video to other devices, service providers are looking at Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) streaming technology common in the Web video world. ABR enables video to run smoothly as bandwidth fluctuates by chopping video assets into tiny chunks, which are then stitched back together by software clients in the various video display devices. But ABR also raises unique technical and operational challenges for traditional video providers and other network operators tasked to deliver content to subscribers. This webinar addresses ABR's possibilities and challenges and includes techniques for video providers to measure and increase the quality of service delivery to subscribers while minimizing the impact on network expansion.
