Virtual machines, and the VNF applications that run in them, form the core building blocks of Telco cloud infrastructures. As telco cloud service providers prepare to deliver innovative and rapid new services in mobile and IoT-enabled NFV infrastructures, performance and efficiency of the data center server farm become paramount considerations. To enable virtualized, server-based, network performance scaling the industry has developed a number of acceleration mechanisms.

Accordingly, this webinar will show the strengths and weaknesses of approaches based on DPDK, SR-IOV and Virtio as well as focusing on new emerging cloud requirements that are driving the adoption of more programmable approaches based on SmartNICs. Specifically, the webinar will explore how Netronome's SmartNICs with innovative Express Virtio (XVIO) technology eliminates these operational, performance and server efficiency-related challenges, delivers the level of performance of SR-IOV solutions to the standard Virtio drivers, and maintains full flexibility in terms of VM mobility and the full gamut of network services provided by OVS and vRouter.

Jim Hodges, Principal Analyst, Core Network Evolution & Analytics, Heavy Reading
Jim leads Heavy Reading’s research on the impact of NFV on the control plane and application layers at the core and edge. This includes the evolution path of SIP applications, unified communications (UC), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), session border controllers (SBCs), Diameter signaling controllers (DSCs), policy controllers and WebRTC. Jim is also focused on the network and subscriber impact of Big Data and Analytics. He authors Heavy Reading's NFV and SDN Market Trackers. Other areas of research coverage include Subscriber Data Management (SDM) and fixed-line TDM replacement. Jim joined Heavy Reading from Nortel Networks, where he tracked the VoIP and application server market landscape and was a key contributor to the development of Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) standards. Additional technical experience was gained with Bell Canada, where he performed IN and SS7 network planning, numbering administration, technical model forecast creation and definition of regulatory-based interconnection models. A CSP's digital transformation involves so much more than technology. Crucial – and often most challenging – is the cultural transformation that goes along with it. As Sigma's Chief Technology Officer, Catherine Michel has extensive experience with technology as she leads the company's entire product portfolio and strategy. But she's also no stranger to merging technology and culture, having taken a company — Tribold — from inception to acquisition (by Sigma in 2013), and she continues to advise service providers on how to drive their own transformations. This impressive female leader and vocal advocate for other women in the industry will join Women in Comms for a live radio show to discuss all things digital transformation, including the cultural transformation that goes along with it.
