Network functions virtualization (NFV) is gradually moving into the commercialization phase as vendor solutions come to market and CSPs firm up business cases. However, a number of infrastructure-based challenges still remain.

One of these challenges is achieving acceptable performance with NFV infrastructures while assuring the flexibility and cost efficiency associated with leveraging a common shared hardware platform. Options to date have either focused on performance or flexibility, but both are required to assure the NFV business case. This is driving a new wave of solutions that are designed to address these specific challenges and trade-offs of NFV.

Accordingly, this webinar will review all these options, as well as consider the advantages and challenges that each present.

Specific topics to be addressed in the webinar include:

  • The current status of NFV and the challenges being faced today
  • NFV infrastructure implementation options and their associated advantages and challenges
  • The importance of addressing performance, flexibility and cost-efficiency simultaneously to assure the NFV business case
  • Best practices in balancing the trade-offs between performance and flexibility as well as software and hardware acceleration

Jim Hodges, Senior Analyst, Core Network Evolution & Analytics, Heavy Reading
Jim leads Heavy Reading’s research on the impact of NFV on the control plane and application layers at the core and edge. This includes the evolution path of SIP applications, unified communications (UC), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), session border controllers (SBCs), Diameter signaling controllers (DSCs), policy controllers and WebRTC. Jim is also focused on the network and subscriber impact of Big Data and Analytics. He authors Heavy Reading's NFV and SDN Market Trackers. Other areas of research coverage include Subscriber Data Management (SDM) and fixed-line TDM replacement. Jim joined Heavy Reading from Nortel Networks, where he tracked the VoIP and application server market landscape and was a key contributor to the development of Wireless Intelligent Network (WIN) standards. Additional technical experience was gained with Bell Canada, where he performed IN and SS7 network planning, numbering administration, technical model forecast creation and definition of regulatory-based interconnection models. A CSP's digital transformation involves so much more than technology. Crucial – and often most challenging – is the cultural transformation that goes along with it. As Sigma's Chief Technology Officer, Catherine Michel has extensive experience with technology as she leads the company's entire product portfolio and strategy. But she's also no stranger to merging technology and culture, having taken a company — Tribold — from inception to acquisition (by Sigma in 2013), and she continues to advise service providers on how to drive their own transformations. This impressive female leader and vocal advocate for other women in the industry will join Women in Comms for a live radio show to discuss all things digital transformation, including the cultural transformation that goes along with it.
