Overview: In a move sure to please service providers, MPLS has expanded its role well beyond traffic engineering in the IP network core, to become a true networking layer, extending all the way into the access network. With specs for class of service, quality of service, protection, and end-to-end signaling securely in place, the stage is now set to move MPLS from the confines of core and edge routers to a broader range of service-enabling devices in metro and access networks.
Thanks to maturing pseudowire standards, MPLS-based devices may now offer a range of service options, including the transport of traditional Layer 2 services, point-to-point and multipoint Ethernet services, TDM circuits, and even Sonet circuits over a single converged pipe between customer and service provider. In addition, extending MPLS out from the edge expands the VPN service options an operator may offer.
In this Webinar, we'll look at the ways in which MPLS is being extended from the packet network edge to the customer premises, including:
- MPLS in the access network compared to Layers 1- and 3-driven approaches
- Controlling backhaul costs through the use of MPLS-based access gear
- OAM standards and methods with MPLS in the access network
- Operational management of MPLS in the access network
- Handling TDM in an MPLS access environment
- Using MPLS access to provide end-to-end service quality
- Requirements of the underlying transport network for successful MPLS access deployment
