What do mining companies, fashion brands and banks have in common? They are all talking about digital transformation. The telecom and financial services industries are ahead of most other verticals in their digital transformation though they remain well behind digital natives such as WhatsApp and Alipay. Just as “banks are now IT companies selling financial solutions” (to quote a Boston Consulting Group report), telecom operators are now IT companies selling connectivity and value-added services. And the core components of telecom IT are OSS and BSS. While the vast majority of telecom capex goes on network infrastructure, the IT systems which manage this infrastructure, and the customer-facing applications on top, are critical to transforming the business.
This webinar we will examine digital transformation in the telecom industry through the lens of Business and Operational Support Systems. The key aspects of OSS and BSS transformation we will discuss include:
- Improving the customer experience – meeting customer expectations for ease of ordering and problem resolution; making personalized new offerings based on data analytics.
- Accelerating time to market – turning operators into service aggregators (the platform play) for third parties (e.g., Netflix, Spotify, Deezer, financial services, utilities, etc.), similar to the app store concept for smartphones. The platform opportunity is not just about consumer services but also encompasses the myriad B2B2X opportunities that IoT entails.
- Increasing the agility of operations – increasing automation and the ability to rapidly respond to new customer requirements.
- Unleashing internal innovation – adoption of DevOps and a fast-fail mentality to unleash the creative potential within a telco's own workforce and provide an attractive environment for recruitment.

James leads Heavy Reading's OSS/BSS research service. He examines the breadth of software used by communications service providers in customer, business, service and infrastructure management. James's areas of focus include BSS, OSS, SDP, policy management, revenue assurance, service assurance, analytics and business intelligence. He is particularly interested in the impact of SDN and NFV on operator's IT systems.
Prior to joining Heavy Reading, James worked for more than 15 years as an analyst covering technology and telecom companies for various investment banks and industry research firms. He previously worked as a management consultant in industry.
James holds a BSc and MEng in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester, England.

Prior to Viptela, Ramesh was at Juniper Networks as a senior product line manager establishing the product vision for enterprise and datacenter routing products (M and MX Series), and WAN-focused solutions for Fortune 100 companies.
Ramesh holds a Master of Science in Computer Engineering from University of Kansas, and a Master of Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
