5G network technologies will demand extreme bandwidth and, for some critical use-cases, ultra-low latency. To achieve those objectives a new distributed RAN and access network architecture is being developed that should meet demanding capex, opex and performance requirements.

This new architecture introduces RAN functional splits that impact how operators will deploy, optimize and assure the network, and will open up new interfaces for near-real-time radio analytics and optimization. Using techniques such as virtualized RAN and dynamic resource allocation, it enables tightly coordinated, ultra-dense deployments that will generate extremely challenging throughput, latency, timing, and synchronization performance targets. This, in turn, requires an efficient and programmable fronthaul and backhaul solution.

In this webinar, we will explore the new 5G RAN architecture and its impact on deployment and operations, with a focus on optimization, assurance, testing, troubleshooting and service automation tools.



 

Gabriel Brown, Principal Analyst - Wireless Data Services & LTE, Heavy Reading
Gabriel covers the mobile network system architecture, including evolution of the RAN, the mobile core, and service-layer platforms and applications. Key technologies in his coverage area include LTE Advanced, small cells, Evolved Packet Core, carrier Wi-Fi and software-centric networking technologies such as NFV, SDN and service chaining. Gabriel has covered mobile networking since 1998 through published research, live events, operator surveys and custom consulting.

Dr. Sameh Yamany is the CTO of Viavi, where he drives technology innovation and execution for the company’s new platform for analytics and visibility. He is the former CEO and President of Trendium, where he led innovations in service assurance and analytics and the creation of a new paradigm in Customer Experience Assurance (CEA). Dr. Yamany's industry experience also includes his senior executive role at Tektronix Communications where he set the vision and development of the Iris wireless and wireline monitoring and troubleshooting suite of applications.

Dr. Chris Murphy, Research Director, Location Intelligence and RAN Solutions, Viavi Solutions
Chris Murphy, Research Director at Viavi Solutions, has 15 years commercial experience in telecommunications covering network performance measurement, optimization and SON, particularly in cellular RAN including LTE, UMTS, CDMA and WiMAX. His focus has been on the modelling, simulation and optimization of next generation technologies to build a revenue stream early in the life cycle of each new generation of telecommunication systems. Prior to Viavi Solutions, through the acquisition of Arieso, Chris worked for Motorola and Nokia developing new technical capabilities for the service portfolio.

He has contributed to various industry and standardization bodies including 3GPP and NGMN for optimization and SON, and the WiMAX Forum. Chris holds a degree in Mathematics and Computing, and a Ph.D. in the calibration of oceanic remote sensing satellites for improved models of climate change. He has authored numerous journal and conference papers and has filed 16 patent applications.

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field.
