Gabriel covers the mobile network system architecture, including evolution of the RAN, the mobile core, and service-layer platforms and applications. Key technologies in his coverage area include LTE Advanced, small cells, Evolved Packet Core, carrier Wi-Fi and software-centric networking technologies such as NFV, SDN and service chaining. Gabriel has covered mobile networking since 1998 through published research, live events, operator surveys and custom consulting.

Dr. Hassan Ahmed, Chairman & CEO, Affirmed Networks & Senior Advisor, Charles River Ventures
Dr. Hassan Ahmed was previously chairman of the board of Sonus Networks. He successfully led Sonus as Chairman, President and CEO from 1998 until June 2008. During that time, he grew Sonus from its startup roots to the global market leader in IP-Voice infrastructure. Prior to Sonus, he was Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Core Switching division of Ascend Communications, which grew to a $1 billion business under his direction. He served as Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering of Cascade Communications prior to its acquisition by Ascend. Previously, Hassan was President and Founder of WaveAccess, a pioneer in high-speed wireless network products. He has also led engineering at the DSP Division of Analog Devices, and founded and served as the Director of the VLSI Systems Group of Motorola Codex, which brought the world's first VLSI-based high-speed networked modems to the market and grew to lead market share.

Ibrahim Gedeon, Chief Technology Officer, TELUS
Ibrahim Gedeon is one of the global telecommunications industry’s eminent thought leaders. He has carved out an international career by combining tremendous insight and skill as an applied scientist with a lighthearted and non-conventional approach to leadership. As Chief Technology Officer for TELUS, a leading national telecommunications company in Canada, he is responsible for all technology development and strategy, security, service and network architecture, service delivery and operational support systems, as well as service and network convergence, and network infrastructure strategies and evolution. Under his leadership the TELUS wireless broadband network has become one of the best in the world.

Within industry Ibrahim has held leadership roles and chaired many events in the IEEE and received the IEEE Canada's Outstanding Canadian Engineer Award in 2001. He serves on the board of the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance, the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions and the Institute for Communication Technology Management. He has a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the American University of Beirut and a Master’s in Electronics Engineering from Carleton University. In 2010, Ibrahim received a Honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia. In 2014, he was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of engineering. He has been named five times to the Global Telecoms Business magazine’s GTB Power 100, a list of the 100 most powerful and influential people in the telecoms industry.

Steve Bayless, Vice President, ITS America
Steven H. Bayless is the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy, and Senior Director of Telecommunications and Telematics at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America). He is responsible for providing guidance to ITS America’s Board of Directors and senior staff on matters involving new technologies, wireless services and evolving automotive platforms, intelligent transportation infrastructure, operations and customer services.

Steven previously served as staff advisor and Presidential Management Fellow in the Secretary of Transportation’s policy office at US DOT headquarters. Steven had cabinet-level lead in policy related to research and development, spectrum management and telecommunications policy.

As a detailee to the White House, he assisted in formulation of several presidential directives on aerospace policy, focusing in particular on satellite navigation. He also advised the State Department and the Federal Aviation Administration in negotiations on space and aviation cooperation with the European Union, the Russian Federation and Japan. In the surface transportation domain, Bayless supported secretarial policy initiatives regarding the reorientation of federal research and development, highway safety, and transportation infrastructure finance reform.

Steven’s career also includes tenure as a management consultant with American Management Systems (now CGI) in Washington DC, and as a Project Coordinator for DuPont Europe in Budapest, Hungary. Steven holds a specialized masters degree from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in International Security Studies and Business. His bachelor degree is in Economics and Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He has also completed graduate work at Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge Massachusetts, and at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary.

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field.
