Evaluating the Performance of VOIP Devices & Security*
![]() Sponsors: Agilent Technologies Host: John Nakulski, Product Manager, Agilent Technologies, and Mark Teicher, ICSA Labs Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2005 Time: 2:00 p.m. New York / 7:00 p.m. London time Overview: VOIP Development and Deployment This Webinar will help both network operators and manufacturers of VOIP and security equipment:
-Minimize the impact of new denial-of-service attacks on VOIP performance
VOIP Trends
New Challenges - Network Address Translation (NAT) creates security, performance, and interworking problems for VOIP. Manufacturers are creating several standard and many proprietary approaches for “NAT traversal” – such as STUN, TURN, ICE, UPnP, ALGs, RSIP tunneling, and extensions to SIP and H.323 – that enable VOIP calls to penetrate firewalls and security gateways, often with security compromises and performance degradation. -VPN tunneling lengthens call setup times and prevents intermediate security devices from inspecting packets. IPSec and IPSecv6 encryption adds voice latency and decreases the ultimate system capacity. -Denial-of-Service attacks can target the same addresses and port numbers used by VOIP devices and applications. New threats allow eavesdropping. Intrusion prevention devices can mitigate attacks but they can also become bottlenecks. During the Webinar, you will learn how to quantify the impact of DOS attacks on VOIP performance. -Web Traffic such as HTTP, P2P, instant messagin,g and video streaming can congest networks and degrade VOIP performance through firewalls, edge routers, and other Layers 4-7 devices. In this session, we will help you assess the impact of other Web traffic on VOIP, using real application clients and servers, to ensure that network equipment is capable of prioritizing VOIP traffic under load and meeting QOS requirements.
