The mobile sector of the telecom business is "fairly recession proof" says former MobileOne Ltd. (M1) (Singapore: MONE) CEO Neil Montefiore. But the challenge for operators, he says, is to decide whether to upgrade their networks, subsidize handsets, and embrace new technologies like LTE in uncertain economic times.
Montefiore’s vibrant and energetic management style was a major factor in the company’s growth but now, in times of economic uncertainty, the appointment of the CFO to the main role may be a prudent move. If thetelco industry follows the trends of the last major industry downturn, then we may see a similar trend in other operators worldwide. Glad that Montefiore had a plan B.Not having a plan B of some sort can have disastrous consequences. In the middle of a recession, banks are typically a lot stricter with lending. They feel the pinch as well as everyone else, and they don't have the resources to continue with previous practices.
