We're only beginning to talk about 40 Gbit/s and the distant horizon of 100 Gbit/s, and yet Ethernet's originator, Bob Metcalfe, wants us to start thinking about Terabit Ethernet? At those speeds, some have wondered whether the fundamental building blocks of Ethernet will still be used and whether it's even fair to call it Ethernet at all.
Metcalfe answers the skeptics and tackles some of the possible technologies that will get us there, as well as many of the business drivers that he thinks are already compelling us down this path. Not only that, he thinks he has something to offer here as we start considering a world where packets move at unheard of speeds.
