As Mobile World Congress packs up to leave Barcelona, we present our video report from the show, hitting a few of the key points of interest on the minds of mobile operators and equipment makers.
First, just how long will it take for 3G technology to make way for newer, faster, cooler stuff? We tapped our feet impatiently for its arrival, now we can't wait to give it the bum's rush. Nortel Networks Ltd. 's CTO, John Roese, as usual, has some sharp sound bites for us on that topic, while Heavy Reading wireless analyst Patrick Donegan sets the table by discussing what recent developments brought the controversy to the front page.
Handset user interfaces were another hot topic here. What hath Apple's iPhone wrought? Well, the show floor at Mobile World Congress was simply littered with examples of iPhone-inspired simplicity and functionality. But it is it too little, too late?
Finally, the regulators nabbed the spotlight for a while, as European commissioner Viviane Reding did her usual chirping about data roaming cuts and keeping the mobile operators from gouging consumers. It's all tough talk for now, but will she finally get the operators' attention, or will she be left roaming around (ha!) looking for political support?
Enjoy the video and don't mind Fritz Nelson's Spanish. [Ed. note: His first language is gin.]
