Verizon Fires Up AWS Support

The Samsung Galaxy S IV will be the first smartphone to take advantage of the faster speeds of Verizon Wireless's new Advanced Wireless Spectrum (AWS) via a forthcoming software update.

Verizon VP of Network Support Mike Haberman confirmed to Bloomberg that the S4 was built to run on the AWS frequencies, but will require a software update to make the connection. The Samsung device went on sale Tuesday for US$200 with a two-year contract. Haberman didn't say when the carrier would issue the software patch.

The Nokia Lumia 928 is also AWS-compatible, but has yet to receive the necessary software update. (See Nokia Flagship to Sail onto Verizon in May?)

Verizon acquired additional AWS spectrum from a group of cable companies in 2012 that it has promised to deploy services on this year. With its LTE build-out nearly complete, the carrier plans to turn to AWS to beef up its capacity in urban areas. It will upgrade 5,000 of its cell sites in major cities like New York with AWS support by the end of the year. The faster frequencies will help Verizon keep up with growing data traffic on its 4G LTE network, eventually doubling its network capacity. (See Verizon: We're No Spectrum Hoarders.)
