US regional operator Cellcom has deployed radio network optimization startup Vasona Networks' gear for improved mobile video performance and more.

The service provider, which operates in Michigan and Wisconsin, is using the Vasona Networks SmartAIR 1000 edge application controller and SmartVISION analytics console on its network. Cellcom Inc. claims that during periods of congestion, it gets "more than 30% improved bit rate performance for video and web browsing, and a 35% reduction in mobile service latency."

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company developed the "Edge Application Controller" server software that sits between the RAN and the core and allows carriers to allow "see" into the radio network and manage sessions at the cell.

The technology reduces congestion by providing different data types with different bit rates as needed. For instance, video needs a consistent bit rate to avoid jumpiness, whereas other applications may not. The SmartVISION console takes the data from SmartAIR controllers at the RAN, and allows operators to centrally analyze and manage it. (See Vasona Grabs $12M to Tackle Cell Congestion.)

Vasona was a Best Mobile Product finalist for this year's Leading Lights awards. (See Leading Lights Finalists 2014: Best New Product (Mobile).)

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field. As always, we'll also leave plenty of time to answer all your questions live on the air and chat board.
