TWC COO: Beware of Over-the-Top Services

NEW YORK -- Content providers should be leery of working with over-the-top Internet video services that threaten advertising and subscription revenue streams, Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) chief operating officer Landel Hobbs said Wednesday.

Hobbs, speaking here at the Digital Hollywood Media Summit, did not name specific providers such as Boxee or Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), both of which want to deliver content directly to viewers through set-tops or other devices connected to a high-speed Internet connection.

But the warning from the COO at the nation's second-largest cable TV operator is noteworthy, suggesting that the cable industry may look to combat over-the-top Internet services that bypass service providers such as Time Warner.
