COLUMBIA, Md. -- High-tech start-up Trellis Photonics said it will soon begin construction of an $18 million, 60,000-square-foot, manufacturing facility near its headquarters here as part of a $25 million, five-year plan to deploy an advanced all-optical switching technology for use in high-speed fiber-optic communications networks. Trellis said it would hire approximately 350 new employees to work at the new plant, which will built in the Columbia Gateway Business Park and will include office space, research and development labs, and manufacturing equipment to support volume production of the company's products. Trellis currently employs more than 150 people in the U.S. and Israel.

"This expansion is another step forward in the evolution of Trellis, and tremendous news for communications service providers and information users everywhere," said Timothy K. Cahall, CEO of Trellis Photonics. "Setting up a major U.S. manufacturing facility is critical to our goal of delivering an extremely high-speed technology that will dramatically change the way we build networks and live our lives."
