Time Warner Launches VoIP in NYC

Time Warner Cable unveiled its voice over IP (VoIP) service in parts of the New York City area, its home market, on Wednesday. The service, known as digitalphone, offers subscribers in sections of Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Mount Vernon unlimited local, in-state and long distance calling for as little as $39.95 a month, if bundled with digital cable and high-speed Internet service. The offering also includes such features as caller ID, call waiting with ID, call forwarding, caller ID blocking and other options for no additional charge. Most customers can keep their old phone numbers. Other features, such as operator assisted calls, directory assistance and voice mail, cost extra. Sprint is providing the local and long-distance connectivity, as it is in more than half of Time Warner's markets. With the launch, Time Warner has now rolled out VoIP service to at least 16 markets across the U.S. At least nine more are now in the testing phase. Time Warner aims to roll out service to all 31 of its divisions by the end of the year.
