Euronews: Telefónica Teams With Samsung

May 17, 2013 | Paul Rainford |
Telefónica Digital, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Vodafone Portugal and Telia proffer something for the weekend in today's trawl of the EMEA headlines.

  • Telefónica Digital has struck what looks to be one of the most significant carrier billing relationships to date, having reached an agreement that will allow Samsung smartphone and tablet users to buy all manner of digital content and services using their phone bill. • Portugal may be another southern European country on its uppers, but Vodafone has big plans there, reports Reuters. The operator intends to double the size of its fiber network, reaching 1 million Portuguese homes by 2015.

  • Swedish operator Telia also has major capex plans over the next couple of years: It will invest more than 5 billion Swedish kroner ($700 million) per year until 2015 to bolster both its mobile and fixed networks, reports Telecompaper (subscription required). If all goes to plan, LTE will cover more than 90 percent of Sweden in two years' time.

  • eircom, the struggling Irish incumbent, has launched eFibre, its high-speed broadband network, offering downlink speeds of up to 70 Mbit/s and uplink speeds of up to 20 Mbit/s. Monthly tariffs start at €40 ($51) for consumers and €24.79 ($32) for businesses. (See eircom Introduces eFibre and Lenders to Lean on Eircom.)

  • Alcatel-Lucent and Interoute Communications Ltd. are to collaborate on the deployment of a new subsea link for operators with Tunisiana and Orange Tunisia. The Didon cable will connect Kélibia in Tunisia to Interoute's pan-European fiber network.
