5:55 PM -- The city of Stockholm can claim bragging rights for the first commercial Long-Term Evolution base station site, thanks to Telia Company and Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC). (See Ericsson, TeliaSonera Launch LTE.)

It's a commercial site, but it doesn't have a commercial service running on it. TeliaSonera plans to launch services in 2010. There aren't a lot of users attached to the base station now, but it will be integrated into the LTE TeliaSonera is building, according to Thomas Norén, director of LTE at Ericsson. The LTE base station is collocated with GSM and UMTS base stations at the site in downtown Stockholm, and it runs on 2.6 GHz spectrum.

With this news, TeliaSonera has a jump on competitors Tele2 AB (Nasdaq: TLTO) and Telenor's Swedish subsidiary, which have formed a joint venture infrastructure company to roll out LTE in the country. (See Swedish Operators Join Forces in LTE Race.)
