Star Spangled Burrito

10:00 AM -- Y'all may have heard by now that there's a new Spanish pop version of "The Star Spangled Banner," our notoriously thunderous, but unsingable, National Anthem. The New York Times reports that the President has weighed in on the burgeoning quasi-controversy:

  • "And I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English," Mr. Bush said. "And they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

You can almost hear the "Got-Demmit!" can't you?

Meanwhile, watch for a Congressional subcommittee to be empaneled:

  • "He recognized that Texas was rapidly becoming a state that would have more Hispanics and more African-Americans than it would Anglos," said Senator Lamar Alexander, Republican of Tennessee, who plans to introduce a resolution on Monday "to remind the country" why the national anthem should be always sung in English...

The Spanish wire service Agencia EFE once said [Bush] spoke the language poorly, "but with great confidence."

(They're referring to his Spanish.)

The Times story includes a link to "Nuestro Himno." Funny, but they make it sound an awful lot like "We Are the World."

Sigh. Wake me when it's over...
