Light Reading
There are more than 80 finalists in 16 categories for this year's Leading Lights awards, and it's an impressive bunch.

Bumper Year for the Leading Lights Awards

Light Reading has unveiled the shortlists for this year's Leading Lights, and it's a truly impressive line-up to mark the 10th anniversary of our industry awards program. (See Leading Lights 2014: The Finalists.)

We received hundreds of entries for our 16 categories and, having been involved in every Leading Lights program so far, I can honestly say that the quality of the submissions has never been higher. We could have easily named multiple winners in a number of categories, but resisted that temptation. Some of our shortlists, though, are not so short…

And this year we have more finalists than ever -- more than 80 companies are represented in the shortlists. But that's partly because we added three new categories this year to highlight the ongoing (and, in my mind, increasing) importance of the components, test & measurement, and OSS/BSS sectors.

Check out the full list of finalists in our Prime Reading feature, Leading Lights Awards 2014: The Finalists.

At this point I'd like to say "thank you" to everyone who entered. It takes time and effort to put together and submit a compelling submission, and all the hard work is much appreciated.

So, I guess you want to know when the winners will be announced?

The winners, and the identities of this year's Light Reading Hall of Fame inductees, will be announced at the Leading Lights awards dinner, which will be held during the evening of Tuesday, June 17, at The Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Find out more by checking out the Leading Lights 2014 site.

Why Chicago? And why June 17? Because that's the time and place for Light Reading's Big Telecom Event (BTE), which takes place June 17 and 18 at The Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. With the line-up we have for that event -- keynote addresses from Alcatel-Lucent, Deutsche Telekom, Google, Sprint, and Telefónica, plus participation from many more senior service provider executives -- plus the awards party, Chicago is the place to be in mid-June.

Last year's awards party was in New York in early October, and it was quite the event. Check out the slideshows and videos below to see who was there and to find out who was dressed up as a giant chicken.

Re: Really looking forward to awards night....
Thank you for such a good reminder of the 2014 Leading Lights Awards. The problem with these awards is that they are given to those who do not deserve them, in that you find that some winners are just put forward experiments instead of giving out a tangible and reasonable innovations within the market. I hope this time round the nominees will get what they deserve.

I've been to a wedding at the Planetarium. It is quite an awesome venue. Plus, our open bar and DJ (Dan Jones?) will be better than the one at the wedding, so I can't wait!

But, I imagine a test tube could be a prized, based on how weird some of them were at last year's show...

Absolutely! We do not let anyone holding a test tube pick up a prize.

Still, it will be important for LR to ensure that the winners are offering real innovations to the market, and not just putting forward science experiments.

Really looking forward to awards night....
After last years awards party -- very exciting and also great fun --  I'm really looking forward to Chicago.

Who will be the first person to make the cliched link between the awards being held in a Planetarium and the 'stars of the industry' being present?

Oh, that would be me...
