Alcatel-Lucent Preps New OSS Pitch

Alcatel-Lucent is preparing a significant network management systems strategy announcement next week during the TM Forum Live! Event in Nice, France, according to industry sources, and the details might sound somewhat familiar to followers of the company's OSS strategy.

The event on the French Riviera is the biggest annual industry gathering of service provider IT executives, and has long been the time and place for companies to make significant OSS and BSS announcements. For those that get it right, the spoils can be good for the bottom line, since the global telecom software sector is estimated to be worth more than $24 billion a year.

Now it seems Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), which is revamping its portfolio and strategy as part of the Shift Plan put in place by CEO Michel Combes, is ready to unveil how it plans to help network operators better manage their networks, a critical consideration for carriers as they undergo significant network transformations related to the shift to all-IP 4G LTE infrastructure and start to embrace SDN and NFV. (See Alcatel-Lucent CEO: We Can Go It Alone and Vendors Catch NFV Fever.)

The details are set to be unveiled some time June 2-4, but industry sources, who requested anonymity, suggested the strategy will be largely based around traditional management and assurance capabilities and may appear somewhat similar to the OSS Connected Partner Program that Alcatel-Lucent was pushing some years back.

It's also believed that elements of the vendor's CloudBand virtualization platform are being promoted as part of the new push, though this is believed to have been a last-minute addition to the new strategy. Alcatel-Lucent declined to comment on the speculation.

Light Reading will be sure to report as and when AlcaLu actually announces anything. Track our coverage of the Nice event at our special Industry Show News site.

Re: A lot of talk around Alcatel-Lucent at the moment....
Thanks Ray, definitely will be interested in the details, I don't have any hints on their strategy, but some of their NMS's are quite evolved and seemed to be tracked for more user customization.  Keep us updated!

A lot of talk around Alcatel-Lucent at the moment....
It'll be interesting to see what the company actually details next week, especially in terms of how it pulls together the different parts of the organization around OSS. That could be easier said than done....

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field. As always, we'll also leave plenty of time to answer all your questions live on the air and chat board.
