Sony to Cut Up to 10,000 Jobs

Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) will reportedly cut 10,000 jobs -- 6 percent of its workforce -- by the end of 2012 as the company's new CEO attempts to return the organization to a profit.

CEO Kazuo Hirai is expected to talk about the cuts this Thursday, according to the Nikkei newspaper in Japan. Hirai has just taken over from previous boss Howard Stringer.

Why this matters
Sony is just starting to build its reputation as a global smartphone maker after buying out the Sony Ericsson brand in October 2011. The company launched the Sony Mobile marquee at Mobile World Congress this March, and its new CEO has since promised "painful steps" to turn the brand around.
