Big Switch Raises $25M for OpenFlow Push

Big Switch Networks, the OpenFlow startup, has raised $25 million in a B round.

That makes $39 million that the company has raised since starting in March 2010.

The news was reported by GigaOm Tuesday and formally announced Wednesday morning. The round was led by Redpoint Ventures and Goldman Sachs & Co.

Why this matters
It's quite a haul considering how uncool network infrastructure has been in venture circles, and considering Big Switch is purely a software company. It goes to show how hot SDN is.

Of course, we knew that already, with Nicira getting taken out by VMware Inc. this summer for more than $1 billion.

Big Switch became the de facto hot SDN startup once Nicira was acquired -- both sprang from the original OpenFlow research at Stanford University -- but it's important to remember that Big Switch hasn't formally announced its product. Part of its OpenFlow controller has been released in open-source form, under the name Floodlight -- a release that netted the company a Light Reading Leading Lights award nomination.

But we're still waiting for the commercial version, which is in customer trials. It's apparently coming out soon.
