Euronews: Nokia Fixes Lumia Bug

April 16, 2012 | Paul Rainford |

Nokia Corp., Deutsche Telekom AG and KPN Telecom NV start the week in today's romp through the EMEA telecom headlines.

  • Nokia announced over the weekend that it has fixed the software bug on its Long Term Evolution (LTE) Lumia 900 handset it launched on AT&T Inc. in the U.S. earlier this month, reports Reuters. The bug led to data connections being lost in some instances, and its discovery coincided with Nokia issuing a profit warning and suffering an ensuing plunge in its share price. (See Nokia's Nightmare Scenario and Lumia Software Bug Dims Nokia's US Hopes .)

  • Deutsche Telekom is in the thick of it: On the one hand it is eyeing German cable operator Tele Columbus Group, reports Bloomberg, while on the other it is facing the prospect of strikes by around 6,000 workers in the Verdi union, who are unhappy with their pay, reports Reuters.

  • Dutch incumbent KPN is conducting a "comprehensive review" of its BASE mobile business in Belgium, though that's about all it's saying about the exercise at this stage. (See KPN Reviews Belgium Mobile Biz and Euronews: KPN's Slide Continues.)

  • The European Commission has "serious doubts" about the plans of French regulator ARCEP to to set higher mobile termination rates (MTRs) for recent mobile-market entrants Free Mobile (Iliad), Lycamobile and Oméa Telécom. ARCEP said the new rates would compensate these operators for the prices they had to pay to use existing mobile networks, but the Commission believes they will make it difficult for further new entrants to provide call termination services. (See EC Queries ARCEP's MTR Plans, Euronews: Iliad Gets the All-Clear on Free Mobile, Euronews: Iliad's Clogging Our Network, Says FT and Iliad Disrupts the French Mobile Scene .)

  • Myriad Group AG, the Swiss mobile messaging provider, has completed its acquisition of Synchronica plc, the U.K.-based services firm, for approximately £20.63 million (US$32.67 million). (See Myriad Completes Synchronica Acquisition and Myriad Launches Share Offer for Synchronica.)

  • ZON Multimédia, a leading Portuguese cable operator, has turned to India's Subex Ltd. to meet its revenue assurance needs. Specifically, Subex will implement its Revenue Operations Centre (ROC) system for ZON, which has around 1.6 million customers. (See ZON Multimedia Uses Subex's BSS.)
