Euronews: Key Marketing Man Exits Nokia

Nokia Corp., Telefónica SA and MegaFon lead the charge in today's assault on the EMEA headlines.

  • Nokia's erstwhile head of product marketing for smartphones has left the company, reports Bloomberg, just weeks after the company had to apologize for misleading advertising of its flagship Lumia 920 phone. Ilari Nurmi, who been with Nokia for 15 years, announced his departure on Twitter, though he gave no reason for his exit, and Nokia declined to comment. (See Euronews: Nokia Fakes Lumia 920 Ad.)

  • Telefónica Digital, the hyperactive, opportunity-seeking unit of the Spanish giant, has itself launched a new global unit, Telefónica Dynamic Insights, to exploit "anonymised" mobile network data it collects from its smartphone users. Its first product is Smart Steps, a system for retailers wanting to better manage and keep tabs on footfall in their outlets.   • MegaFon, Russia's second-largest mobile operator, is planning an initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange, reports Reuters. When the share sale was first mooted last month, analysts estimated that it could raise around $3 billion. The IPO is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter.

  • VOO, a cable firm serving customers in Belgium's Brussels and Wallonia regions, has upgraded its ADVA Optical Networking FSP 3000 core optical network with Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) technology. Spanning more than 2,500km of fiber, VOO's network comprises 11 100G-capable core nodes and more than 100 secondary optical nodes. (See ADVA Lands ROADM Deal in Belgium.)

  • Colt Technology Services Group Ltd is to implement a pan-European vCloud platform based on VMware Inc.'s vCloud Suite 5.1, enabling Colt customers in any European country to access enterprise cloud services from Colt data centers in the U.K., France, Spain and Germany.   • The Federation Against Software Theft (FAST), a U.K.-based lobby group, is appealing to regulator Ofcom to broaden the scope of its copyright protection rules to include 4G operators as well as fixed-line broadband providers, reports the Daily Telegraph. Ofcom's proposed measures are meant to bring in aspects of the Digital Economy Act. (See Ofcom Cracks Down on Illegal Downloads.)

  • The rumblings over Hutchison 3G Austria GmbH's takeover of Orange Austria Telecommunication GmbH. continue, reports Reuters, with EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia now telling lawmakers that he and his team have "formally raised objections" to the proposed merger because of the "risks that higher concentration in Austria might entail."

  • Vodafone Group plc is unveiling a number of new M2M (machine-to-machine) offerings at the at the Metering, Billing/CRM Europe show in Amsterdam this week, including a system for the remote monitoring of solar panels. (See M2M Cranks Up a Notch.)

  • Shares in South African operator MTN Group Ltd. have been hit by the dramatic fall in value of Iran's currency, reports Reuters. MTN, which derives nearly a tenth of its revenues from Iran, saw its shares drop 3.7 percent in Monday afternoon trading in Johannesburg.
