Britain's Chancellor, the ever-popular George Osborne, is banking on the forthcoming 4G spectrum auction to raise £3.5 billion (US$5.6 billion) for the government's coffers, reports Reuters. He hit upon the figure during his half-yearly budget statement. (See Brits Braced for 4G .)
Osborne also used his Autumn Statement as an opportunity to announce the second wave of U.K. cities that would share a £50 million ($80.6 million) funding pot for the rollout of super-fast broadband and public-access Wi-Fi, reports The Guardian. Oxford and Cambridge are among the 12 cities included in the second tranche.
The chairman of Nordic operator TeliaSonera, Anders Narvinger, has been persuaded to step down over problems related to the company's operations in central Asia, reports Reuters. TeliaSonera's purchase of an operating license in Uzbekistan was the subject of a corruption investigation earlier this year.
U.K. mobile joint venture EE is planning to borrow £350 million ($563 million) from the European Investment Bank to enable it to increase the height of many of its masts, making them more 4G-friendly, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.
