It seems that Sony does want to get to the VR market first and best. They're previewing the new device shortly in Indianapolis at electonic big box stores before the official public sales begin. Those that join the VR marketing late might be left behind unless they've got a real blockbuster product.

Sony
I can see why Sony wants to be a frontrunner for VR. The console market is in flux and people increasingly are attracted to mobile devices. 

Virtual reality headsets could change that. If Sony corners that part of the VR market, it could be really good for them.
