Euronews: France Telecom Profits Slip in 2011

February 22, 2012 | Paul Rainford |

France Telecom SA, Deutsche Telekom AG and Yota top the bill in today's trot through the EMEA telecom headlines.

  • France Telecom's full-year results show numbers were down in 2011, with revenue falling 1.6 percent to €45.3 billion (US$60 billion) and EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) down 4.8 percent year-on-year to €15.1 billion ($20 billion). Oddly, given the country's current financial woes, Spain provided one of the bright spots on the balance sheet, with a 4.5 percent rise in revenues year-on-year. • Deutsche Telekom group CTO Olivier Baujard has left the company, Light Reading has learned. His resignation follows the departure of another high-level exec, chief technology and innovation officer Edward Kozel, at the end of last year. Baujard's interim replacement is Dr. Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, director of technology at Telekom Deutschland GmbH. (See Euronews: Shareholders Turn On AlcaLu CEO.)

  • Russian wireless operator Yota is planning to switch 300,000 WiMax services customers to Long Term Evolution (LTE) overnight in April rather than let them migrate over time as originally planned. (See Yota Switches LTE Tactics.)

  • Spanish giant Telefónica SA is selling its stake in satellite company Hispasat for €124 million (US$164 million), reports Bloomberg, as part of a plan to chip away at its €55.43 billion ($73.37 billion) debt pile. (See Euronews: Layoff Costs Tear Into Telefonica's Q3 and Telefonica Restructures, Creates New Units.)

  • Following the Great Indian Mobile License Debacle that resulted in Uninor, the Telenor ASA/Unitech joint venture, losing all 22 of its licenses, the Nordic operator is to ditch its Indian partner, reports Reuters. Telenor accused Unitech of "fraud and misrepresentation," while for its part Unitech said Telenor's decision was "shocking." • Everything Everywhere Ltd., the joint venture between T-Mobile (UK) and Orange UK, is planning a return to the bonds market this year to raise funds for the U.K.'s long-awaited 4G spectrum auction, reports the Financial Times.
