Euronews: BroadSoft Buys in Germany

Repost This

Also in today's EMEA regional roundup: Greater UK scrutiny for Huawei; EE strikes roaming deal with AT&T; M2M World Alliance makes its move.

  • BroadSoft Inc. has extended the reach of its hosted, managed BroadCloud unified communications service offering in Europe with the acquisition of finocom, a German provider of cloud-based services to enterprises. BroadSoft is paying about $9 million for a company expected to generate revenues of around $2.5 million in 2014. BroadSoft, which sees the acquisition as a stepping stone to offering its BroadCloud services in Eastern Europe, made a similar acquisition in the UK earlier this year. (See BroadSoft Buys Into British Cloud.)

  • Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. 's operations in the UK could be in for greater scrutiny from the government, according to the Financial Times (subscription required). An imminent report from the prime minister's national security adviser, Sir Kim Darroch, is expected to recommend a tightening up of protocols around some of the more sensitive of Huawei's infrastructure deals in the UK, and a closer look at the Chinese vendor's operations at its cyber security evaluation center in Oxfordshire (creepily called "The Cell"). Huawei responded to the news in a carefully worded official statement, part of which said: "Huawei shares the same goal as the UK Government and our customers in raising the standards of cyber security in the UK and ensuring that network technology benefits consumers." (See Security Concerns Cling to Huawei.)

  • EE , the joint mobile venture between T-Mobile (UK) and Orange UK , has struck what it says is the UK's first 4G LTE roaming agreement -- with AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T). EE plans to announce more such partnerships in 2014. For more details and general 4G blather, click here. (See Q&A: EE Evolves Its 4G LTE Strategy.)

  • The M2M World Alliance, which involves a number of EMEA operators, has announced its first "multi-operator global solution." This, it claims, will simplify and speed the adoption of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications worldwide. Etisalat , KPN Telecom NV (NYSE: KPN), Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) and VimpelCom Ltd. (NYSE: VIP) have all nailed their colors to the mast of the M2M World Alliance, which is not to be confused with this.

  • Cut-price French mobile operator Iliad (Euronext: ILD) is keeping up the pressure on its rivals by offering high-end smartphones for lease on a couple of its sub-€20 (US$27.50) Free Mobile packages, reports Reuters. Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPhone 5S and Samsung Corp. 's Galaxy S4 can both be rented for €12 ($16.50) a month on these packages, after an initial payment of €49 ($67.30).

  • But the fightback is on: Bouygues Telecom has announced that it will, like its rival Iliad, offer 4G for no extra cost on some of its low-cost packages. Orange France has also said that it will respond to Iliad's move with some sort of 4G offer on its Sosh brand. Looks like a race to the bottom from where we're standing…

  • Orange Spain has chosen AirTies ' OTT/hybrid DVB-T set-top box platform for the delivery of its pay-TV services. The AirTies offering combines traditional broadcast technologies with IP/OTT using Microsoft Smooth Streaming and PlayReady DRM.

    The Cell
Whoever decided to call the cyber security center "the Cell" was not doing Huawei any favors. Speaking of which, maybe it's time for Huawei to start being more proactive about fighting these concerns through some kind of new global image campaign.
