9:50 AM -- News Corp. (NYSE: NWS) is planning a national newspaper exclusively for mobile phones and tablet computers, such as the iPad.
According to the LA Times, the digital newspaper will be available by the end of the year and will target a "general readership" with "short, snappy stories that could be digested quickly." It will operate under News Corp.'s New York Post and be overseen by the tabloid's managing editor.
LAT also says News Corp. may charge a subscription fee for the digital newspaper, though details are still unclear.
"We'll have young people reading newspapers," News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch said on the company's recent earnings call. "It's a real game changer in the presentation of news."
There may be something to this -- according to a recent survey of iPad users in the UK, 31 percent say they prefer to read news on their iPads.
Meanwhile, in other tablet news, The Wall Street Journal reports that seven out of the ten largest US subscription-TV providers are working on new applications that would allow their subscribers to watch TV shows and movies on tablet devices.
