Is Telepresence Worth the Money?

12:30 PM -- There's little doubt that telepresence is really cool. But there's no denying how expensive it is (about $300K per room). Costs like that raise the question of whether there is a viable business model for it. Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), Teliris Ltd. , and Nortel Networks Ltd. will tell you that of course there is and that the high costs don't even matter because telepresence is just that good.

Light Reading readers seem to agree. We asked some of these questions in a reader poll, and 60 percent of the 155 respondents concurred that telepresence is worth the money at its present costs. Also notable is that 42 percent of all respondents felt that telepresence is something most employees at a company would use and not just the top-level executives. (See Telepresence.) 2008 will be a telling year in seeing whether or not this is true.
