SBC Picks S-A for IPTV Infrastructure
Scientific-Atlanta announced a multi-year deal today with SBC Communications to provide the IP video infrastructure for the telco's new fiber-rich network. Under the agreement, S-A will design, build and activate the IP video super hub offices, hub offices and video operations center for SBC's Project Lightspeed network. S-A will also provide video encoders and its element manager system for the SBC network, which will be able to deliver video, voice and data services to 18 million homes in the Bell's 13-state area. The move by SBC comes five months after Verizon Communications, which is ambitiously building its own fiber-rich network to deliver all three services, inked a digital set-top deal with Motorola. That multi-year pact also calls for Motorola to provide video network infrastructure equipment, project integration and operational services to Verizon.
