SBC & 2Wire Form Home Entertainment Venture

SBC Communications and 2Wire Inc. kicked off the new year Monday by unveiling a home entertainment service that will combine satellite TV, digital video recording (DVR), video-on-demand (VOD), Internet content, digital photo-sharing, music on-demand and caller ID. SBC said the planned service, separate from its proposed IPTV service with Microsoft over fiber lines, will roll out mid-year to both SBC Dish Network and SBC Yahoo DSL subscribers. 2Wire, a maker of home networking gear, will supply its MediaPortal technology for the new SBC digital set-top box. Ed Cholerton, vice president of SBC DSL, will head the new SBC Media Solutions venture as CEO. Brian Hinman, CEO of 2Wire, will be president of the new compan y.
