SAN ANTONIO -- CCA Global Expo -- The CCA brought its 100 carrier members and their vendor partners to San Antonio this week to discuss the issues unique to their footprint and size.

The theme of the week was "strength in numbers," with more than a hint of duopoly bashing and a healthy dose of advocacy for regulatory changes. For Light Reading, Tex-Mex, goofy hats, and the Alamo were also big themes of the week in Texas.

Click the image below to launch a short slideshow of our trip, on the show floor and off.

The Alamo. Remember?
The site of the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 stands tall in San Antonio, surrounded by even taller buildings, wax museums, old-timey photo booths, tacky T-shirt stores, and haunted adventure tourist traps.

Anything's tasty if you dump enough melted cheese, sour cream, and guac on it.

Tchotchkes ...the word has humble Yiddish origins...be careful though...it also has derogatory meanings...context sensitive to be sure!

The Tex-Mex wasn't great where we stayed, but that's becuase it was right on the touristy River Walk. I'm sure other areas had better options!

And, yep, tchotchkes are the little (often worthless) gifts you can get from booths. See also swag, trinkets, souvenirs, collectibles, keepsakes, crap...

Re: LTE differentiation
Yep, that did come up, Mark. What we heard from many smaller carriers like C Spire is they can't do dedicated carrier backhaul, so they're doing multi-carrier. I don't have many more specifics than that, only that backhaul remains a big challenge as they look at public access small cell deployments (most hadn't done that yet).

Pheeeeel!
Not enough food or pet photos.

The Tex-Mex wasn't great?

Tchotchkes? Is that some sort of Texas slang word, y'all?

I would've spent the entire show at the iPhone accessories case. I'm an addict.

We should all wear Davy Crockett hats at professional appearances.

Re: LTE differentiation
I always enjoyed talking with the rural IPTV providers in the past becuase they would do such cool stuff with hyperlocal content. I think that was their biggest advantage, because they could target their region in a way that big cable providers never could. It's a big tricker to leverage that ability to connect on a local level as a wireless operator without dedicated channels and programs, but I still think it's an advantage for them as well if they come up with new ways to personalize.
