SINGAPORE -- QMax Communications Pte Ltd, a mobile WiMAX service provider in Singapore, announced today that wireless broadband service is now being offered in the main harbor and coastal areas in southern Singapore using mobile WiMAX technology powered by POSDATA FLYVO.
This service is part of the WISEPORT (WIreless-broadband-access at SEaPORT) initiative, which is carried out jointly by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore. An official launch of the service was held on 6th March 2008 attended by MPA and IDA officials as well as members of the Maritime Community.
QMax and POSDATA concluded a contract last year on mobile WiMAX equipment supply ranging from base stations, ASN-gateways, and network management software to USB terminals and gateway routers.
As the first phase of the project, QMax and POSDATA will implement a mobile WiMAX coverage in the southern coastal area of Singapore with a 15 kilometer radius that includes major harbor locations such as the Jurong, Pasir Panjang, TanJong Pagar, and Tuas, starting early this year. The mobile WiMAX coverage makes it possible to provide high-speed broadband service to wireless users in the sea.
The crew and passengers on ships that are anchored or navigating in this area can now enjoy various services, such as Internet browsing, email, video conferencing and VOD, wirelessly while onboard. The mobile WiMAX network can even be accessed to receive updated information on navigation, port calls and departures in real time. Plans have also been established to enable vertical services, such as bunkering management systems and unmanned security services. QMax, along with POSDATA, is getting ready to step into the second phase to expand the service area by installing base stations in major downtown areas in Singapore by the end of second quarter. It will deploy more base stations to offer secure seamless connection by the end of 2008.
POSDATA, along with the supply of equipment to the Singaporean market, has established commercial reference sites in overseas as well as in Korea and fully proven its mobile WiMAX technology, further bolstering expectations for the company’s advancement into the global market. The Singaporean market is a gateway to the Southeast Asian market and has a huge influence in neighboring countries.
Mr. Alex Tan, Director of QMax said, “With the launch of the WISEPORT initiative, we are confident that QMax working closely with its WiMAX technology partner POSDATA will be able to provide a reliable and comprehensive platform of high-speed wireless coverage in Singapore.”
