EPON Protocol Over Coax (EPoC)

A proposed Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) standard for modulating EPON signals on hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) plant. If successful, the standard, which envisions symmetrical 10Gbit/s speeds, will extend the life of HFC and perhaps indefinitely delay cable operators from having to push fiber all the way to the premises. The initial focus of EPoC will be business services, but longer-term, MSOs will also be interested in using the technology for residential services when Docsis runs out of gas.

An EPoC standard is not expected to emerge until 2015.
