Pace plc failed to reach a deal to buy Motorola Home from Google
on terms that its board could live with, the U.K.-based set-top maker said in a statement Thursday. Pace CEO Mike Pulli said an acquisition of Motorola Home would have accelerated Pace's stated strategy of building on its hardware business and expanding into software and other new areas, but "only if real shareholder value could be delivered." Pace, which was required by U.K. law to halt trading when it announced on Dec. 10 that it had made a bid for Motorola Home, didn't disclose what it offered. But we know it was less than $2.35 billion. That's what Arris Group Inc.agreed to pay in cash and stock to claim the prize.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced a bill Thursday aimed at providing protections against data caps imposed by ISPs and ensuring that data caps don't undermine broadband competition. The Data Cap Integrity Act would institute data measurement accuracy standards for ISPs and "impose disciplines to ensure that ISP data caps are truly designed to manage network congestion" and not exist to jack up fees artificially.
Comcast Corp. is certifying a new voice-control feature for the X1 Remote app that goes with the MSO's IP-capable X1 video service, reports FierceCable. The app already lets X1 subscribers navigate the TV user interface by swiping the screens of iOS devices. Comcast has launched X1 in five markets so far, with California's Silicon Valley being the latest to get the goods.
Lots of exec shuffling at TiVo Inc. this week. Company CFO Anna Brunelle has resigned to "pursue other opportunities" and will be succeeded by Naveen Chopra, who is also being promoted to senior VP of corporate development and strategy. In other moves, Dan (Charles) Phillips has been promoted to COO, and Jeff Klugman was elevated to executive VP, products and revenue.
