Ovi Store Picks Up Steam

11:00 AM -- Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK)'s Ovi Store is gaining ground thanks to growing developer support, a phone named N8, and some Angry Birds. The handset maker announced today it has 3 million downloads per day from the app store and more than 400,000 new developers building for the platform in the past 12 months.

Nokia attributed the success to global demand, and updates to its Symbian Ltd. smartphone line that give it a friendlier look and feel, as well as the inclusion of more popular apps and games. It didn't break down its numbers by region, but it did note the most popular apps of each region and overall. Globally, the top-selling paid app was the addictive Angry Birds and the most popular free app was Q Torch, which turns the phone into a flashlight.

Other impressive stats from Nokia's Ovi celebration include that:

  • 165 million people across 190 countries are using the storefront

  • The subscriber base is growing at a rate of 250,000 new users per day

  • Ninety percent of visits to the Ovi Store result in an app download, with each registered visitor downloading an average of 2.6 apps

  • Ninety-two developers have reached the 1 million-plus download milestone each for their apps

  • There have been 1.5 million downloads of its Qt software development kit in 2010 so far

  • More than 400,000 new developers have signed up with Forum Nokia in the same time period.

Nokia's download numbers are up from 2.3 million per day last month, so it's rapid progress for the global leader even as it slips in market share, although it still has a way to go to catch up to Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s 10 million per day. (See Nokia Boasts Ovi Success and App Insights: Nokia Ovi Store Professes Relevance.)
