TOKYO -- NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced today that the Japan-U.S. capacity of its Tier-1 Global IP Network exceeded 1Tbps in September 2015, marking this the first time a Japan-U.S. network has reached that speed.

The expanded capacity will allow the network to support demand that is expected to double over the next two years, driven by the rapidly growing number of internet users on smartphones and tablets and the growing adoption of broadband. Increasing use of music and video streaming, high-resolution images and 4K data are also boosting capacity needs.

The Global IP Network, a pioneer of commercial IPv6 technology, is one of the world's largest IP backbones among global Tier-1 network providers and is the number-one network in Asia. The high-speed, high-capacity service is offered in Japan and major countries in Asia, North America, Latin America, Europe and Oceania. The Asia-Oceania channel has reached a total capacity of more than 1.5 Tbps, while the Japan-U.S. channel handles more data than any other ISPs, now at over 1Tbps.

In order to effectively and proactively deal with increased traffic, NTT Com has been investing in related technologies, including 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) technology, which has now been introduced in the U.S., Europe and Japan, and 100 gigabit per second (Gbps) digital coherent transmission, a next-generation optical transmission technology on the PC-1 submarine cable.

NTT Com will continue to monitor usage and upgrade capacity to ensure high-performance, low-latency and cost-effective global access to a well-developed Internet environment, leading the industry in ICT development, quality network services and 24-7 support.
