TeliaSonera Overlays With Ciena

Ciena has maintained its 2014 momentum with a pan-European transport network deployment with TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC), one of the leading international wholesale data transport network operators.

Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN), which last week won the Leading Lights Best New Product (Telecom) award for its WaveLogic Photonics system, is providing its converged OTN/Ethernet 5400 platform, OneControl Unified Management System and OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane software, to Telia Carrier for the provision of 1G to 100G services. The value of the deal was not revealed. (See Leading Lights Awards 2014: The Winners and Leading Lights Finalists 2014: Best Telecom Product (Part 1).)

TSIC, which provides DWDM, Ethernet, IP, interconnect, and voice services to more than 1,000 wholesale customers globally across a network with more than 200 points of presence (POPs), says the "scalable and flexible converged optical platform" will enable the "rapid deployment of seamless, highly resilient 1-100G optical services to service provider customers."

In winning the deal, Ciena has trumped two of its key rivals, Coriant and Infinera Corp. (Nasdaq: INFN), both of which were already deployed by in Europe by TSIC. Infinera, though, looks set to gain further business in Europe from the operator, and is already the lead supplier for TSIC's transport network in North America. (See TeliaSonera IC Picks Infinera.)

So what does this mean for incumbent optical platform supplier Coriant? Has it been ejected?

No, says the operator. "TSIC still uses the Coriant platform, but will use Ciena's 5400 equipment for an OTN overlay network," director of communications Charlotte Züger tells Light Reading in an email response to questions.

And what of Infinera, which broke into TSIC's European network in June 2013 with a deployment of its DTN-X platform on the critical Stockholm-to-Hamburg route? (See On Your Toes, Coriant!)

Züger says that deployment is "still in place," and that TSIC has plans to extend the use of Infinera's gear "to more routes in Europe."

The new overlay network deal is the latest in a string of positive announcements by Ciena this year. For the latest Light Reading coverage of Ciena, see:

Ultra-competitive in Europe
The European transport market looks to be more competitive than ever -- Ciena, Coriant, Huawei, Infinera are battling it out, it seems, in long haul. Don't tend to see ALcaLu so much in the  mix when these sorts of deals are announced, but that may be just a perception rather than a reflection of actual market traction.
