Sichuan Mobile Upgrades Metro Transport With Huawei

SHENZHEN, China -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that it will work closely with the Sichuan Branch of China Mobile, Sichuan Mobile, to deploy WDM-based full-service metropolitan bearer networks in over 10 cities across Sichuan Province, including the capital, Chengdu. Aiming to significantly improve the transmission capabilities of existing metropolitan area networks (MANs) in Sichuan, the project represents an important step towards fulfilling the "Broadband China" strategy laid out by the national government.

In the face of rapidly growing FTTx, LTE, and leased line services, Sichuan Mobile estimates that the bandwidth demand from its metro aggregation sites will exceed 100G over the coming three years. Besides the bandwidth challenge, service provisioning is slow and network maintenance is complex on existing MANs which transmit a wide range of services (such as TDM, Ethernet, and SAN; with 2M-10G rates) and comprise a great variety of devices (PDH/SDH/MSTP/switches/routers).

To overcome these challenges, Sichuan Mobile decided to deploy full-service metropolitan bearer networks using Huawei's Packet Optical Transport System (POTS) solution. Based on a unified switching platform, the solution can more efficiently deliver high-bandwidth multi-service transmission. The case-shaped 400G WDM device adopted by the solution is ideal for MAN equipment rooms, which are typically crowded with equipment and have limited power supply resources. At only 5U high, it is much smaller and more energy efficient than a traditional rack-mounted device of the same capacity. The innovative device supports AC and DC power and can be flexibly deployed in various scenarios.

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field.
