It's impossible to predict what will turn up in the morning's email flood at Light Reading HQ, but it's not often we get a set of pictures as interesting as the ones provided by Jon Baldry, Technical Marketing Director at Swedish transport equipment vendor Transmode Systems AB . (See Transmode Reports Q3 Gains, Transmode Gets Enlightened, and Transmode Unveils SDN Strategy .)

Baldry's colleague, vice president of marketing Ola Elmeland, was one of the lucky winners of the prize raffle draw at the Leading Lights awards dinner in New York City on October 1. In front of more than 200 fellow guests, Elmeland spun a giant wheel that contained the names of the Top 10 Most Ridiculous In-Flight Magazine Products (as featured in Light Reading in August).

As luck would have it, Elmeland's spin stopped on the The Pipe of Gandalf.

Baldry was fortunate enough to be with Elmeland when the pipe arrived, so they both had a puff, as the pics below show. Normally, Light Reading would not encourage smoking, especially in the workplace, but there are always exceptions to the rule...

Pipe Smoker of the Year
Transmode's vice president of marketing, Ola Elmeland, takes a moment with his Pipe of Gandalf and reminds himself how his company won the Leading Lights 'Top IPO/M&A Candidate' award in 2008 (the trophy is at his left elbow). Transmode joined the stock market in May 2011.

Feeling like Rip Van Winkle
And some of us who've hung around the telecom industry too long think of Gandalf Technologies and X.25 networks--both of which went up in smoke.

Re: Hollywood beckoning
I think he should wish for the Beard of Gandalf, the Hat of Gandalf, the Cloak of Gandalf and the Staff of Gandalf on his holiday list and then request all company travel be by Giant Eagle from now on, don't you? It would suit!

Sorry

I think they wrapped the Hobbit already. Better hope he makes something out of "The Third Age."

I'm not a scientologist as far as I know!

Humm Tom Cruise, I think folks are more likely to see me as a Hobbit than a pipe smoking Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Are you allowed to smoke a pipe on a US Navy aircraft carrier? I believe it was mandatory in the Royal Navy at one time, but is frowned upon today.

Re: Hollywood beckoning
You are perfect for taking any role for which Tom Cruise was being considered... except he doesn't have access to the pipe, so you trump him!

And you're not a Scientologist (as I understand it)...

Hollywood beckoning
Hi Ray,

Yeap that's my looking wistfully out of the window while contemplating where to go for lunch look. I'm short enough and possibly hairy enough for quite a few roles in any Tolkien based movie. Does anyone have Peter Jackson's number?
