China Telecom, Huawei Test SDN

WUHAN, China -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and China Telecom, today jointly announced that they have completed China's first SDN test in Wuhan from January 21 to 23. The test, conducted by Beijing Research Institute of China Telecom, verified that the T-SDN (Transport SDN) solution could evolve large numbers of legacy transport networks to SDN networks. This marks significant progress in the commercial use of the T-SDN solution.

As the world’s largest broadband network operator, China Telecom’s transport network is extremely complex due to rapid development. The traditional transport network supports only offline service planning and cannot match ever-changing networks in real time. Service provisioning is time-consuming and cannot meet customers' dynamic service requirements.

The Transport SDN network uses centralized network control to replace traditional distributed network control and helps operators quickly establish flexible, open, and differentiated transport channels. Based on Huawei's OTN/ROADM commercial devices and T-SDN solution, this test used a centralized controller to implement online network analysis and quickly delivery of optical-layer and electrical-layer services, which indicates that Huawei's T-SDN solution has brought great improvement in network O&M automation to operators.

As an intelligent operating system for transport networks, Huawei's T-SDN solution supports automatic O&M functions, including network resource auto-discovery, centralized control on multi-domain networks, fast online service provisioning, online survivability analysis, and network resource evaluation. By integrating these functions in a control platform to implement centralized dispatching and to automatically calculate the optimal service paths and complete path commissioning, this solution can help quickly and flexibly deploy service, shorten service time-to-market, and meet end-users' real-time service requirements to implement network intelligentization.

Mr. Zhang Chengliang, Deputy chief engineer of Beijing Research Institute of China Telecom, said, "Through this test, we have experienced the benefits brought by the SDN solution. It also lays a foundation for future northbound API interface-based application development and interworking among multi-controllers from multiple vendors."

Mr. Zha Jun, president of Huawei’s Fixed Network Business Unit, said, "The evolvement from transport networks to SDN networks will activate the utilization of legacy network assets, open network capabilities, support rapid technology innovation, and improve network performance based on virtualization, automation, and intelligentization. The SDN technology not only overcomes the difficulties in deploying numerous sites and simplifies network O&M, but also improves the network transmission efficiency and service quality to help operators reduce OPEX with the assist of multi-layer coordination and bandwidth optimization. Huawei will continue to cooperate with industry-leading operators to promote the commercial use of SDN networks."

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling. Engelbert will also reveal new, original Ovum research on the topics of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, security and augmented reality, as well as discuss what each of those technologies might mean for women in our field. As always, we'll also leave plenty of time to answer all your questions live on the air and chat board.
