SHENZHEN, China -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, recently announced that it will deploy Africa's first 100G WDM network for Unitel. This network marks the start of commercial applications of 100G networks on the African continent. Using state-of-the-art optical transport technology, including coherent transmission and ASON technologies, this network will offer Unitel a future-ready intelligent and infinite Bandwidth Cloud.
Unitel is a leading mobile operator and has the largest and most advanced mobile broadband network in Angola, but faces challenges to remain competitive. These challenges include greater bandwidth requirements as new services, such as HSPA+, LTE, and FTTX, continue to grow, and accidental damage to fiber optic cables, which frequently occurs due to fast-paced construction in urban areas.
Huawei's 100G ASON solution offers an answer to these challenges through the combination of multiple technologies. First, the mature coherent detection technology achieves a future-proof capacity of up to 8 Tbit/s per fiber over an ultra-long reach. Second, Huawei's cutting-edge ASON technology supports resilient protection against multiple fiber cuts and thus significantly enhances network reliability. This ASON technology also enables operable and management bandwidths by offering a great variety of service classes. Third, Huawei-developed 100G OTN technology drastically enhances network efficiency and flexibility, by virtue of its support for multi-service access, multiplexing, and cross-connections.
