FREMONT, Calif. -- The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) today announced the adoption of two Very Short Reach (VSR) OC-192 interface Implementation Agreements. These VSR interfaces are intended to help reduce the cost of OC-192/STM-64 links between equipment in a single central office (CO). The OIF-VSR-03.0 (VSR-3), titled Very Short Reach (VSR) OC-192 Four Fiber Interface Based on Parallel Optics, utilizes four fibers each way at 2.5 Gb/s on a single 12-fiber Multimode ribbon using 850 nanometer lasers using vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) technology . The OIF-VSR-04.0 (VSR-4), titled Serial Shortwave Very Short Reach (VSR) OC-192 Interface for Multimode Fiber, utilizes a single 850 nanometer VCSEL for the transmitter optical element, and a single PIN PD for the receiver.

"Providing lowest cost interface specifications for different applications has been the focus of the PLL working group," said Adam Dunstan, president of OIF. "The choice of four different specifications reflects the different maturity levels of the technology and the differing needs of carriers."
