EU leaders are expected to give a "cautious welcome" to proposals for a single European telecom market today, according to a Reuters report. The European Commission will be asked to draw up a detailed plan by October, says the report. In a EurActiv video interview at Mobile World Congress last month, Neelie Kroes, the European Commission's vice president for the Digital Agenda, expressed her frustration at the lack of cross-border consistency in the European telecom market. Telefónica I+D, the research and development arm of the Spanish giant, has completed lab tests of Nokia Siemens Networks' FlexiGrid transport architecture, claiming that the tests showed that generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS)-based FlexiGrid networks are "technically feasible." That'll be something that Coriant, the new optical company comprising NSN's optical business and the remains of Sycamore, will be able to shout about once NSN completes the sale of its optical business. An organization dedicated to help households address the problem of their TVs experiencing interference from 4G signals has been launched in the U.K., reports the BBC. On Monday, at800, as the organization has been christened, will begin live trials in the West Midlands region, temporarily activating some 4G masts to see how many households are affected.
MTN Group Ltd. is off the hook in Uganda, reports Reuters, as the courts there have thrown out a tax fraud case which implicated the unit's CEO and a dozen other officials on charges of tax evasion and conspiracy.
And finally, a U.S. report has found that European drivers are less likely to be talking on, or fiddling with, their mobile phones than their American counterparts. They're also less likely to have a bumper sticker declaring "Jesus is my airbag," but that's another story.
