Next-Gen Data Center Management

February 27, 2013 |
Huawei ManageOne, an innovative data center management solution, allows operators to expand their IT service lineups to encompass cloud offerings, thus creating differentiation from other IT suppliers, and improving their chances for new revenue streams to boot.

Anything as a service

IT managers today face unprecedented challenges. On the one hand, there is robust demand for IT services, as enterprises embrace new business trends such as IT consumerization, BYOD, and big data; but on the other hand, IT service offerings are hindered by complicated infrastructure and low operational efficiency, and this makes time to market (TTM) and ROI very challenging. With IT budgets tightening, the gaps between IT service requirements and capabilities are still widening. Cloud computing is considered the savior that will close these gaps; it is set to reshape the way IT resources are deployed, configured, utilized, and managed. The anything-as-a-service (XaaS) model enabled by cloud computing breaks down the physical boundaries between IT assets and turns IT infrastructure into a highly secure resource pool that flexibly caters to specific service requirements. For any XaaS customer, tailored IT services are readily available at any required level of service. Operators are increasingly starting to recognize the enormous value of the XaaS business model. They have a chance to expand both revenue and profit for existing communications services by offering cloud-based services to enterprises; but they must first manage cloud-based services effectively and efficiently, and offer value-added services along with them such as service level agreements (SLAs). However, the systems in place that do either or both are enterprise-oriented and don’t entirely meet the needs of the telco operator. To gain a competitive edge in cloud computing, carriers will need timelier service provisioning that enables service abundance; reliable service quality assurance through proactive SLA-based performance monitoring; and service automation enabled by flexible & dynamic automation suites for processes, servers, networks, and configuration.

Huawei ManageOne solution

Huawei’s innovative unified data center management solution, ManageOne, focuses on improving core data center competencies through efficient IT resource utilization, management, and control, delivering a successful cloud business experience for the operator, who enjoys, along with customers, an intelligent, efficient, and unified data center management platform where IT services are easily available.

  • Fast & efficient service provisioning

With all the changes going on in terms of service diversity, especially those enabled by cloud computing, IT departments need to be far more dynamic and flexible in how they respond to business needs.

However, with current data center infrastructure and operations, the typical service launch process lasts at least a month, during which a service request is submitted, hardware is deployed, software is installed, security facilities are established, management control is configured, environmental gear is deployed, products/packages are defined, and service catalogs are added. ManageOne changes theis game, thanks to its automated service provisioning and dynamic service launch processes. Launch preparations are pre-set in the service launch process suites, and operators can choose them based on specific service requirements, making for a fast and efficient service provisioning experience. One operator in Southeast Asia has seen a significant gain in service TTM, launching a high-performance virtual machine rental service in just three days that met customer needs related to the Christmas online shopping rush.

  • SLA assurance

For operators, SLA can be a key service differentiator. However, legacy IT infrastructure is already complex and virtualization platforms are nascent, making SLA guarantee no easy task. ManageOne aims to elevate the business value of data centers, from mere IT support & enablement to actual service quality enhancement. The IT operation management & unified resource management suites provide IT engineers with a clear picture of IT infrastructure & facility impact on service quality and implementation results, while its unified visualized performance overview covers all key nodes, so engineers can proactively identify potential risks, locate root causes, and ultimately solve these problems before they reach end users. In other words, Huawei ManageOne helps operators improve service quality and reduce customer complaints.

However, nipping issues in the bud is not enough. ManageOne also alleviates potential risks by introducing automatic and template-based operations. Its cloud automation suite provides a centralized overview of physical & virtual clouds, and private & public cloud resources. Customers can simply choose and obtain services by accessing applications, or the service catalog, via a secure online portal, while operators enjoy timely deployment of the resource pool (thanks to cloud automation) at minimal operational cost. Productivity is also boosted through timely server imaging & configuration technologies, enabling operators to benefit from improved O&M management efficiency and greatly reduced service provisioning time.

One distinct feature of ManageOne is that it governs the entire service delivery lifecycle, enabling assurances of the highest quality. Through this solution, IT personnel can better control the application status throughout the entire process and ensure a superior quality of service at the customer end. ManageOne’s E2E management also ensures scalable holistic IT process integration, so operators can manage billions of service transactions without making unnecessary hardware investments or service customizations.

  • Centralized management

With cloud computing services now in high gear, operators are now under great pressure to manage heterogeneous data center environments and still meet their energy reduction and operational efficiency targets. To overcome meet these challenges, an integrated management approach is desperately needed.

Huawei’s ManageOne solution centralizes management among traditional data centers and cloud centers, among distributed data centers, among data center application systems, architecture & infrastructure, and among heterogeneous virtual platforms; all IT resources are pooled together and managed in a centralized manner, facilitating dynamic cross-resource services provisioning with reduced need for inter-departmental communication. It is an intelligent, efficient, and unified data center management solution that enables the highest assurances of service quality, so operators can provide differentiated cloud-based services and improve revenue opportunities to boot. With ManageOne, data centers move one step farther from being cost centers, and one step closer to being value centers; it is the next generation of data center management.
