Motorola, S-A Boost Voice Modem Shipments
Both Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta ended last year with strong cable modem sales, thanks largely to growing MSO demand for embedded multimedia terminal adapters (e-MTAs). In its second quarter earnings results announced earlier today, S-A reported that it sold a record 981,000 modems in the quarter, including 391,000 voice modems. Motorola, in its fourth-quarter earnings announced at the same time, said it shipped a record 500,000 e-MTAs during the three-month period. The Motorola earnings report didn't disclose how many total modems the company shipped. On the video side of the business, Motorola said it shipped 1.4 million digital set-top boxes in the fourth quarter, down from 1.6 million in Q3. S-A said it sold nearly 1.2 million digital set-tops in the quarter, up slightly from 1.1 million boxes in the previous quarter. S-A also shipped record numbers of HDTV set-tops (386,000 units) and DVR set-tops (556,000 units) in the fall quarter.
