As telcos have closed down their app stores, and their websites are worse than useless on selling services.  Most have a 3 line description and then expect customers to sign-up immediately for a fee.  What about trial to buy, or freemium?  What about channel partners?  What about focusing on letting though a small fraction of the 1000s of services operators get pitched every year?

Also the institutions that should be supporting service innovation across the industry are focused on weird standards-based approaches where standards are irrelevant if not detrimental, and with a clique of vendors rather than the industry.

Enterprise is a really interesting space, but the same capabilities that enable enterprise "innovation" can also be enabled for consumer and M2M. This is similar to the way VC's allocate funds to both consumer and enterprise products, which allows them to get the rewards from both.

@smkinoshita: Well there are many if they focus properly. I too believe that it should target the wide market. Innovations should come in a big manner. What my point is that you cannot lag behind for long since there are many competitors in the market. So if you do not invent new things that capture the eye of the users, you will be thrown out from the market.

@anthony.nima:  What kind of innovations do you see coming down the pipe?  I've read that the future is in mobile data and I can see that in day-to-day operations of many organizations.  (In my experience it's been a need to access data and analytics anywhere.)

I've heard is suggested that one such innovation focuses on customizing packages based on clients, but the video article suggests that there's a wide range of innovations that will be required.  Thoughts?

I feel innovation is something which has to be done on a regular basis right now. It was in the good old days that innovation comes as a surprise once in couple of years but right now every hour there are many things moving out and coming in so the competition is very high. If you cannot innovate then you are virtually thrown out of the market by the customers itself.

In the Enterprise space there are significant opportunities that both play to strength of operators (templated services and scaling). We like the Enterprise space because getting work done usually trumps cost avoidance (consumer behavior). As Enterprises have majority of devices perpetually on wireless tech of one sort or another, Enterprise IT could move much of IT plumbing to Managed Services, exit operations, and migrate to an architecture/service delivery governance role.

As Graham points out, the development and successful marketing of new services and applications is the lifeblood of the ENTIRE MOBILE SECTOR -- the operators have got to get this right!!

Understanding the full experience of women in technology requires starting at the collegiate level (or sooner) and studying the technologies women are involved with, company cultures they're part of and personal experiences of individuals.

During this WiC radio show, we will talk with Nicole Engelbert, the director of Research & Analysis for Ovum Technology and a 23-year telecom industry veteran, about her experiences and perspectives on women in tech. Engelbert covers infrastructure, applications and industries for Ovum, but she is also involved in the research firm's higher education team and has helped colleges and universities globally leverage technology as a strategy for improving recruitment, retention and graduation performance.

She will share her unique insight into the collegiate level, where women pursuing engineering and STEM-related degrees is dwindling.
