Euronews: Ukraine Networks Under Attack

Paul Rainford

Also in today's EMEA regional roundup: securing WiFi in Sochi; cloud services player gets accredited; Irish messaging startup bags €15 million.

  • As the crisis in the Crimea region of Ukraine continues to unfold, Reuters reports that Ukraine's telecom network has come under attack, according to the head of the country's security service. The official, Valentyn Nalivaichenko, said that equipment illegally installed at the entrance to JSC Ukrtelecom 's offices in Crimea is being used to "interfere with" the mobile phones of various Ukrainian members of Parliament.

  • And in the light of recent developments in the region, the following piece of news seems almost ironic: Russian operator Rostelecom has revealed that it deployed Nominum Inc. 's Vantio ThreatAvert solution to protect its WiFi network in Sochi, the resort city that hosted the recent Winter Olympics. Vantio ThreatAvert uses DNS data to thwart cyber attacks.

  • London-based cloud services provider Exponential-e Ltd. claims it has become one of the first European players in its field to attain CSA Star Certification from the Cloud Security Alliance .

  • Kwikdesk, an Irish messaging startup, has secured around €15 million (US$20.6 million) in Series A funding, according to The Independent. Kwikdesk is a messaging platform that requires no login or password and keeps no record of users' identities, providing a level of anonymity that will no doubt prove widely attractive.

  • UK cable operator Virgin Media Inc. (Nasdaq: VMED), which last week upped the stakes in terms of residential broadband speeds, is following in the footsteps of rival BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) by offering 120 new paid apprenticeships. For more details see this press release.

A vital part of increasing the number of women in comms is transforming the ways companies can support and empower women. While progressive company policies that support both men and women in achieving work-life balance are a step in the right direction, creating a company culture that supports those policies can at times be more challenging.

During this show, we'll talk to Lynn Comp, Senior Director of Industry and Sales Enabling (ISE) in the Network Platforms Group at Intel, about why those challenges exist and how companies can overcome them. She'll provide insight into how Intel has worked to create a culture that supports work-life balance, and provide steps and guidance for other companies wishing to do the same. We will also leave plenty of time to get your questions answered live on the air.
